“Granum” in Latin refers to coarse grain, and because of its “granumy” structure, granite got the name.

Granite contains many different minerals, even quartz is in it.

4. The Hardest One

Granite is at 8 on the Mohs hardness scale. The measures are from 1 to 10 with 10 being the hardest.

5. Granite Contributed to the First US Commercial Railroads

As it is a great building material, granite has always been in demand. And because it had to be transported quickly and in great quantities, one of the first railroad systems in America has been created.  It connected Massachusetts and Quincy with a dock and is known as the Granite Railways. At the dock, it was loaded and shipped to other locations.
